Ansonborough Inn Ghost Returns

A Charleston dream? Or was it real?

I recently experienced a jolt in my sweet slumber that left me shaken and completely unsure of what had just happened.  This occurred a few weeks after I had watched a video about a terrifying paranormal event someone had experienced at the Ansonborough Inn in Charleston, SC several years ago.

I was fascinated by that video as I too had spent several nights at that particular Inn not long ago. The person in this video had experienced a harsh awakening in the middle of the night by an unknown presence and had been visibly shaken by the intense feeling of fear that had engulfed him.  He was convinced it was a supernatural being that had visited him.  The story continued that he had possibly been visited by a Confederate soldier after a trip to one of the downtown graveyards he had taken earlier that day.

I decided to delve a little deeper into the history of Charleston and the Ansonborough Inn.  I spent several hours perusing websites and looking through several books I had on hand to see if I could find anything out.  Finally my sleepiness overtook me and I went to bed.

About 5 am, I awoke to a terrible feeling of being watched.  I got up, went into the bathroom and returned to my bed sure that it was just a dream.  I drifted back into sleep.  In my dreams there were the usual family and work related themes that we all seem to dream of.  But all of a sudden there was a woman who turned toward me then came rushing towards me.  I was grabbed and literally felt shaken and tossed around.  It was violent and unexpected. I had never experienced anything like this before. I awoke trembling and scared.  I knew in my head it was just a dream but it seemed different and there was visible evidence that something had happened.  The next day I had several bruises I had not been aware of.

Again - I know it was just a dream and possibly those bruises had occurred after working out or cleaning the house but it was unsettling and gave me pause.  Had I disturbed some presence looking deeper into the history of the Ansonborough Inn?

  1. I just stayed at the Ansonborough Inn two nights ago in the Admiral's Suite. I chose that place because my brother's name is Anson. I had read about the ghosts but that was part of the fun. I have never been so terrified in my life. I will never stay there again. EVER. It is a beautiful historical place. The rooftop is great with a view of the bay, very nice to meet people. But I was awoken from a dead sleep about 3:30 A.M. absolutely terrified with my heart pounding and so frightened that I was too scared to even open my eyes. I've never felt anything like that before in my life. I had read before about two ghosts, one who is a prankster who hides things, then another one who is really scary, a demon maybe, so I thought maybe I was dreaming about it and was just afraid and tricking my mind. It seemed about 10 minutes of being terrified of every little sound, there was a bad storm in Charleston and my room had a sky light so it was really noisy, so when I finally felt calmer I looked at my phone and it said 3:44. So I guess I fell back asleep but the second time that night I was frightened awake by the most angry sounding male voice you can imagine. The only way I can describe it was he was whispering yet yelling at the same time in my ear and my heart was beating so fast I thought I was having some sort of heart condition, in the middle of the night. I couldn’t understand what he said. I went from a dead sleep to being awakened and feeling like an evil presence was right next to me, daring me to open my eyes. I was instantly wide awake, scared more than I've ever been, but I was way too afraid to open my eyes. Again, I've never been that scared even as a child. I was frozen with fear. I kept my eyes shut and prayed under the covers. My son was sleeping on the couch in the next room, but he was drinking a lot before going to bed so I knew he wouldn't help me at all so I just lay there, absolutely terrified for a few minutes I felt for the remote and turned on the tv then opened my eyes and turned all the lights on and the TV on full sound not caring about the neighbors, it was 3:57 when I finally looked at the clock and after being so scared and contemplating leaving the room and going down to the lobby, I eventually felt better just watching something about survival in the snowy mountains. I didn’t go back to sleep and I have to say that I will never stay there again because real or just dreams, the fear was real and I never ever want to feel what I felt there, EVER again. And oh yeah, the closet door was open in the morning but I intentionally closed it the night before because I thought the robes hanging up may scare me in the night.
